Stormwater Management Strategy

Stormwater is water that originates during precipitation events. Stormwater that does not soak into the ground becomes surface runoff, which either flows directly into surface waterways or is channeled into storm sewers, which eventually discharge into surface waters.

Stormwater is of concern for two main issues:

i) Related to the volume and timing of runoff water (flood control and water supplies)

ii) Related to potential contaminants that the water is carrying i.e. water pollution.

All stormwater discharge runs along the spouting, down into an underground drain, flows through a piped network and is eventually discharged into the river. Then more water joins it from driveways and footpaths around town.

Most stormwater is channeled into drains intended to protect the town against flooding. However as the town continues to grow and develop, the increased runoff will overload some of these drains, causing increased risk to flooding. The water cycle is perhaps one of the greatest wonders of the natural world. As for Nausori, being on the leeward side of the country is helping to work towards a more sustainable water management for the town.

Waste Water
Waste water around town flows through a sewer line which is channeled directly to the main treatment plant. All waste water from households, shops and offices flow through this network of pipes. However there are times when the flow of waste water has been interrupted by chemicals and other solid substances which clots up the flow of water.
