Health Department & Community Engagement

Mission & Vision

The Health and Community Section falls under the Department of Community Services. This section ensures the health of the public is maintained by ensuring environmental health and safety. The primary function of the section is to mitigate and prevent risks which has potential to affect the health of the residents of Nausori. Other functions include awareness and educating the community.

Vision: To create an environmentally sound and healthy township

Mission: Restoring, protecting and safe guarding the health and wellbeing for the residents of Nausori Town by creating a safer, greener, sustainable, health conducive environments.

Environmental and Public Health

The Health and Community Engagement Section are appointed legal enforcers of the Public Health Act and Regulations Cap 111 along with other relevant acts pertaining to ensuring the health of the town.

 Environment planning, impact assessment, development approvals, compliance and monitoring are under the Section’s responsibility. The officers shall be responsible in the processing of all development application and ensure that all applications are processed in consistence with all relevant legislations governing such developments.

Food Safety

The Health and Community Engagement Section are also legal enforcers of the Food Safety in the town. The team is responsible for issuance of Health Compliance Reports, food premises grading, and overseeing the compliance of all food handling businesses with the Food Safety Act 2003 and Food Safety Regulations 2009.

The team does routine surveillance and compliance checks of all retailers, butchers, food processors, Importers, exporters, and caterers.

Vector Surveillance

Conducts monthly surveillance rounds to communities to monitor disease vectors, particularly focused primarily on mosquitoes. The purpose is to identify and track the population of the disease causing vectors and evaluate the risk of any outbreak. The surveillance also determines the need for any mitigation or preventative measures to avoid the spread or start of any mosquito related diseases. This is done together with the Ministry of Health and Medical Services.

Sanitation and Hygiene

The section is responsible for ensuring the residents of the town have accessibility to a clean, hygienic and sanitary environment. The section aims to achieve an environment that has the levels of pollution under control.  The Section takes complaints of any suspected breach of sanitary and hygienic standards and acts to rectify the issues.

Waste Management and Monitoring

The team oversees the waste management of the communities the team works hand in hand with the depot/ Works team of the Council establish schedules and collect data on the waste being produced by the residents on Nausori. The team also sees to proper waste management practices from both the Council and the residents. Part of the responsibility of the team is to also oversee the prevention of illegal disposal of litter and dangerous waste.

Community Engagement

The team is responsible for creating awareness and carrying out educational sessions with the communities within Nausori to drive mindset changes in adopting more sustainable, hygienic, sanitary practices. The team currently focuses on creating awareness to at least two communities every month. This is one of the most important responsibilities of the section, given the town is in a phase of transition between old to newer modern mindset on sanitation, hygiene, environmental management, and food safety.
